Children’s home for young people with neurodiverse needs

In August 2023, Dr Sona Kaur opened the first children’s home in Chadwell Heath, Essex to cater specifically for children with complex neurodiverse needs. Using her experience, Dr Kaur designed the home to help children who need trauma-informed care and therapeutic interventions and provide a space where they feel comforted and cared for.

The home can accommodate up to two children, ensuring they have ample space to relax, study, and engage in recreational activities. It is also an environment that fosters a sense of belonging, security, and personal growth. The home prioritises the physical, emotional, and educational development of each child. Each one has access to the care and support they need and deserve through things like play and wilderness therapy and experienced and compassionate staff members provide round-the-clock care, offering support, guidance, and mentorship. As part of the team of specially selected and trained staff who provide 24-hour support, Dr Kaur also appointed a former PE teacher as manager of the home, who is trained in helping children with diverse needs.

The home specifically houses children in the county who cannot access foster care and traditional children’s home facilities due to their additional needs. Dr Kaur feels that there is growing pressure and a lack of services and funding to help treat and care for children who have been through trauma. The home provides a much needed safe and nurturing environment for children in need within the community. As a dedicated psychologist, committed to the welfare and well-being of children, Dr Sona believes the home will make a significant and positive impact on the lives of those who need it most.

Dr Sona Kaur specialises in helping people with epilepsy, complex PTSD and neurodiversity through her private practice in Essex.
