– GROWING UP IN A TRADITIONAL SOUTH ASIAN HOUSEHOLD

– BALANCING PARENTHOOD AND PURSUING A DOCTORATE

– LEAD THERAPIST AT THE NATIONAL HOSPITAL OF NEUROLOGY AND NEUROSURGERY

Upbringing and Cultural Background

I grew up in a traditional South Asian household steeped in culture and values, which contrasted with the Western environment I was emersed in at school. Navigating these two worlds presented challenges but also offered a unique perspective on diversity. In school, I faced early academic challenges, feeling different without understanding my neurodivergence. My preference for non-fiction books and struggles with attention during certain tasks became clearer as I grew older. These experiences shaped my journey, leading me to appreciate diversity and pursue a career in psychology, where I use my insights to help others.

Uncovering Neurodivergence

In my later years, I discovered signs of being neurodivergent, which explained my sense of ‘difference’ and academic challenges. This self-discovery transformed my perspective and helped me embrace my unique cognitive wiring. Despite the challenges and a late realisation, teachers and academic successes revealed hidden capabilities, sparking newfound aspirations. This revelation motivates me to surpass societal and personal expectations, striving to make myself and my family proud. It’s a journey of self-acceptance and determination, turning perceived limitations into opportunities for growth and achievement.

Achieving my doctorate and establishing my career

My journey through university and pursuing a doctorate while caring for a two-month-old baby was a transformative period, demanding resilience and dedication. It was during this time that my interest in neuropsychology deepened, sparking a passion for understanding human behaviour and the brain that continues today.

My career path as a Clinical Psychologist was influenced by my father’s early passion for psychology, fostering my curiosity about the human mind from a young age. Currently, I work at the National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery, where I contribute my expertise to the psychological aspects of neurology and neurosurgery. Additionally, I manage a private practice and oversee various other businesses, allowing me to combine my professional expertise with my passion for psychology. Through these endeavours, I can make a meaningful impact on individuals’ mental health and well-being across diverse domains.

Learning to thrive with ADHD

Embracing my own neurodivergence has transformed my journey by reframing it as a unique superpower rather than just a challenge. ADHD has enabled me to think innovatively, solve problems creatively, and approach complexities unconventionally. This distinctive cognitive style has led me to explore unconventional paths in business and assist others facing similar hurdles.

My ADHD allows me to see connections and possibilities that others might miss, driving the foundation of my businesses and creating effective solutions. It has become a source of strength, helping not only my own success but also empowering others to discover their exceptional abilities in a world that often overlooks diverse cognitive perspectives.

Future goals

My primary goal is to expand my business to create a more extensive and accessible support network for those affected by mental health issues. This growth will ensure wider access to essential resources and interventions. Additionally, I am committed to being an educator and speaker, using various platforms to spread knowledge, reduce stigmas, and foster understanding and empathy in mental health areas. I want to help as many people as possible, emphasising my dedication to personal growth and making a substantial contribution to individuals’ wellbeing.
